R.E.M. - Leaving New York (Around the Sun, 2004)
The last good R.E.M. song. It has the lazy quality shared by so many lead singles written by aging bands, in which a melody is only considered necessary for the song’s chorus. This tune is unremittingly blank until the refrain. (May we all disregard the cringeworthy recycling of “E-Bow the Letter” in the second verse.) Nonetheless, even with the preposterous “leaving was never my proud,” Stipe tugs at something real with this hook. I’ve been tempted to argue with his assertion that “It’s easier to leave than to be left behind,” but what do I know? Screw Rock ‘n’ Roll leaves; it does not get left behind.
Really, the tune has nothing to do with New York and everything to do with the sudden gush of the coda: I told you — forever — I love you — forever. That part is difficult.
Note that the song ends awkwardly and abruptly. I hope this might be a thematic decision, but I think it’s actually just bad songwriting.
One more thing: This is the only Michael Stipe love song in which I imagine he is singing to a man. I don’t know why.

これはfacebookで交流している友人達のほとんどが日本人のため、
より親しみやすいように、日本語のスペルで表記しておりました。
